I started my treatment with Simon Kirkegaard in 2014 after being diagnosed with a disc hernia in my low back in December 2013. I had already been to different doctors and other physicians, who all made me feel even worse mentally and without any improvement in my pain or physical abilities. I was also told that I most likely would not be able to perform in my sport Powerlifting due to my diagnosis. After a few sessions with Simon I had my smile back, feeling of hope for the future, great improvements in strength and mostly pain-free.

Simon has a completely different approach to the treatment of pain and understanding of my diagnosis. Through conversation, I learned about modern pain science and a lot more about my diagnosis. This information helped me feel more safe and comfortable and we were able to start lifting again almost immediately after. I got it much better and have been able to exercise heavily again. 8 months after my injury I was back performing in Powerlifting and set a new Danish record in bench press and a month after that I made a new a personal record in squat. I no longer view my body as fragile and I am very confident in my back again.

I am forever grateful to Simon for helping me get my freedom back. I was operated this summer for a big disc herniation in my back with the result that I became scared of moving. I went from being an active, happy physiotherapist student to being a socially isolated, sad girl who was afraid of using her own body. I sought help from Simon in hopes that he could help me find the joy and confidence in using my body again. I was surprised – I found much more than just pleasure in in ability to use my body again! I found my old self-esteem, my good mood, my confidence in my body and, best of all, I got rid of my pain and the fear of using my body and the fear of pain. 3.5 hours with Simon was all that it required – he really moved my mind and I have been painless since I was with him for the first time! I reached out to Simon due to regular recurrent low back pain. The pain could last 1 day to 1 month at a time. I have undergone X-ray and been diagnosed with Scheuermann in the back by my doctor. At the first session with Simon, we had a conversation about my life, my beliefs about my pain and my back. Then Simon asked if I wanted to learn more about the complexity of pain and how many mechanisms can influence and modulate pain very quickly. To prove his point I tried out a little breathing exercise and I suddenly felt a lot better in my lower back. I found myself very confused about why my pain changed so quickly and how breathing could affect my experience of pain. So I asked Simon to teach me more about pain. Simon and I talked for more than an hour and I was very pleased with his way of explaining pain and how many different mechanisms besides damage in the tissues can contribute to my pain. I think my pain was mostly about a very stressful time in my life and a poor working environment (the pain in the lower back gave me sick-leave from work). After our talk, we challenged the strength of my back and I was able to lift 140 kg reasonably easy. We also worked on my ability to move and I touched the floor for the first time in a long time. Extremely happy and without pain I walked home after 3 weeks of sick leave at work.

The next morning, I went to work without pain in my back until I stepped in the door of my workplace. Like lightning from a cloudless sky, my back pain came back. Although it was really painful in my back, I couldn’t help smiling, because now I really got the confirmation of why I have recurrent pain in my lower back. Fortunately, I start my education in August, leaving my old working environment and hopefully the pain in my lower back.

Thank you, Simon, for your help, I really like the way you work, and I am very happy about the new perspective I have on pain.

I have had a really good experience with Simon. I was operated in my knee after an ACL injury and after various treatments with both public and private physiotherapists, I didn’t feel much progress and that I had to be careful of how I moved and trained. On my second session with Simon, I was able to squat 100 kg – without pain. Before working with Simon I was hardly able to squat 40 kg without pain and without going below parallel. Weight training has been my primary approach to rehabilitation, which has produced some good results. At the same time, I have achieved that I no longer feel limited by my former injury in other contexts and I feel free to move as I please.

No magic, just an evidence-based approach to me as a client. I can only give my warmest recommendations to Simon.

I heard about Simon through a good colleague who knows him. I came with pain in my left knee which had been limiting me for approximately 7 months. When I arrived my knee really hurt but after talking for about 1-2 hours about my pain and how I understood pain and the mechanisms behind pain the pain disappeared. Simon basically informed me that everything I had been told by my parents, doctors and other physiotherapists simply did not match the current scientific understanding of pain and then he proved it to me. After the conversation, we did some training where he showed me how strong my knee was and how to improve my confidence in my knee. After we were done I have not had any “pain” in my knee! Just a conversation and a little training?!? And have been painless ever since and it’s been 2 months since we had our session!

For the last many years, I have been treated by countless physiotherapists. Everyone has given me the usual core and ball exercises. Unfortunately, this resulted in me over the past many years, adopting a belief that my low back was weak and that I was only able to do exercises on a mat, ball or yoga. This was to me quite boring, especially in the long run.

After two conversations and training with Simon, I have been painless for three months, started running, cycling for longer trips (without back pain) and for the first time in years I have signed up for cycling and swimming events.

My understanding of pain and the way I can handle the pain has significantly improved after a few sessions with Simon. I have been a “back patient” for more than 20 years, and my everyday life has been marked by the fact that I needed to protect my back and always think about what I did and how I did it. I had to quit normal strength exercises like squat and deadlifts. But that is all history. Now I’m deadlifting and squatting again with great pleasure and even with more weight than I ever imagined. This is not a miracle nor is the treatment magical though the effects feel like it. Simon’s treatment is based on common sense and evidence. I can only recommend trying out a treatment with him if you are struggling with pain.

Simon gave me an understanding of what pain is, why you have pain, why it can be both good and bad to have pain, but also how to get rid of the pain and improve my function. I am no longer a chronic pain patient. Simon has helped me to have live a normal life with much less pain than I’ve had for a long time and to understand why it isn’t dangerous to move and how strong my body is. After the treatments, I have no longer need of other health care professionals and have stopped going to my chiropractor and I have also stopped taking medication and for the first time in many years no longer addicted to opioids. All I take now is perhaps 1 paracetamol when I have a headache.
